The coronavirus pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on the Roma community in many countries of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. Precarious working conditions, lack of social security and poor housing conditions that make it impossible to comply with hygiene rules characterise the lives of many minority members. The same applies to the danger of attacks from the majority population or the police. Many people in the Western Balkans still see their only chance for a future worth living abroad, but for many this wish does not become reality. People continue to be regularly deported to these countries from Germany and especially from Baden-Württemberg – sometimes after many years or decades in Germany.
We want to talk about these issues at this event. For this purpose, we have invited two guests who work in the Roma communities in Serbia and Northern Macedonia – among others also with people who have been deported.

Speakers:
Jovana Mihajlovic Mijovic works for the organisation URI (Association of Roma Intellectuals) based in southern Serbia, which provides advice, support and projects for the local Roma community.

Albert Memeti is programme director at Romalitico in Skopje/North Macedonia – an NGO founded by young Roma academics that provides analysis, lobbying, policy advice and does grassroots work to promote political engagement in the Roma community through the AVAJA civic movement.
